On Friday for A-day and next Tuesday for B-day, we will use some common separation techniques to separate different mixtures. The lab to be done in class involves using the lab burners, and some chemicals. Be sure that you come prepared with closed toe shoes. You should review the section in chapter 3 on separation of matter before class as well.

In our next class we will investigate and discuss physical and chemical properties of matter.
Be sure you have read and taken notes on sections 3.1 and 3.2 in your text book.
We will have a mini-lab in class to practice skills associated with the classification of different types of matter.

In class we covered the processes used in the scientific method. Observations and background knowledge all us to provide an explanation of the phenomenon we see all around us.
Controlled experiments allow us to verify if our explanations are true or correct. After experimenting we draw conclusions and revise our explanations and understanding.
With time and many experiments those hypotheses develop into scientific theories and laws.
You will demonstrate your understanding of this scientific approach in answering the question:
How can you maximize the distance a paper airplane travels when thrown?
There will be a quiz on the Lab equipment next class.
